Why do people choose to live in Antarctica?

There are very few permanent residents in Antarctica. The primary reason people stay there is for scientific research. Scientific bases in Antarctica are staffed year-round by anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people, though the population swells during the summer when more researchers (as many as 5,000) arrive for the season.
