Living in Antarctica: Only Scientists Stay Year-Round at Research Stations

Antarctica has no permanent civilian population. The only residents are scientists and support staff at research stations operated by 30+ countries. Winter populations drop to ~1,000; summer swells to ~5,000. Stays range from weeks to 14 months. No one "chooses to live" there in the ordinary sense—assignments are professional, temporary, and governed by the Antarctic Treaty System.
