Glaciers did not have a significant direct impact on the formation or shaping of the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachians were formed millions of years ago through tectonic processes involving the collision of continental plates. The last major glaciers to affect North America, known as continental ice sheets, did not extend far enough south to reach the Appalachian Mountains.
