Nuance: Ethiopia
Ethiopia claims unbroken sovereignty since antiquity (Aksumite Empire, Solomonic dynasty). Only briefly occupied by Italy (1936–41), never formally colonized. By continuous sovereignty, Ethiopia is oldest. By modern republican independence date, Liberia (1847) is first.
Most sources cite Liberia as Africa's oldest modern republic; Ethiopia as oldest continuously sovereign state.
