Germany from South Africa: Not a Compass Direction—It's Hemispheres Apart

Germany cannot be located on an 8-point compass from South Africa because they're in different hemispheres.

  • Germany: Northern Hemisphere (47°–55°N).
  • South Africa: Southern Hemisphere (22°–35°S).

Actual Bearing

From Johannesburg (26°S, 28°E) to Berlin (52°N, 13°E):
Initial great-circle bearing: ~355° (almost due north) — but crossing the equator means "north" reverses meaning mid-flight.

Flight Reality

  • Distance: ~8,700 km (5,400 mi).
  • Route: JNB → equator → Mediterranean → Berlin. Typically 11–13h with 1 stop (Doha, Dubai, Addis, Frankfurt).
  • No polar route: Unlike Alaska→Russia, Africa-Europe great circles don't approach poles.

Why 8-Point Compass Fails

Compass directions (N, NE, E...) assume local flat-earth approximation. Over 9,000 km crossing the equator, great-circle geometry dominates. The initial bearing from SA to Germany is roughly north, but the path curves. "North" from Pretoria points to Congo, not Europe.

Use a globe. Or Google Earth. Not a compass rose.
