How is Nigeria divided?

Nigeria is divided into two major geographical regions:

1) Northern Nigeria:

- Comprises: Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara

- Geographically larger

- Predominantly Muslim

- Hausa-Fulani ethnic group has the largest population

2) Southern Nigeria:

- Comprises: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers

- Geographically smaller

- Diverse religious beliefs (Christianity, Islam, Traditional)

- Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups are predominant

Furthermore, Nigeria is divided into six geopolitical zones:

- North-Central Zone: Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau

- North-East Zone: Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe

- North-West Zone: Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara

- South-East Zone: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo

- South-South Zone: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Rivers

- South-West Zone: Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo
