Republic of the Congo's Leader: Denis Sassou Nguesso

Denis Sassou Nguesso has been President of the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) since 1997, following a civil war. He previously ruled from 1979 to 1992. A former military officer, he leads the Congolese Party of Labour (PCT). His long tenure has been marked by oil-dependent economics, contested elections, and allegations of corruption. The next presidential election is constitutionally due in 2026.
