Why Yugoslavia Was Created

Yugoslavia emerged after World War I to resolve the Serbian‑Croatian conflict. The 1919 Treaty of Versailles dismantled Austria‑Hungary, distributing its territories among new states—Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary. However, new borders trapped large minority populations in hostile nations: Croats and Serbs in Bosnia, Serbs and Germans in Croatia, and diverse minorities in Serbia.

Croats wanted a unified Yugoslavia without internal borders; Serbs sought a Greater Serbia incorporating former Austro‑Hungarian and Ottoman lands. This tension exploded in WWII when Croatia declared independence and massacred Serbs and Jews.

Yugoslavia's creation was an attempt to manage South Slav unity, but unresolved ethnic tensions led to future tragedies.
