Was Malta part of Africa in the past?

Malta is an archipelago located in the central Mediterranean Sea, and thus geographically belongs to Europe. It lies approximately 80 kilometers south of Sicily, 284 kilometers east of Tunisia, and 333 kilometers north of Libya.

Geologically, Malta is formed from a part of the African tectonic plate, which collided with the Eurasian tectonic plate millions of years ago. This collision resulted in the uplift of the African plate and the formation of the Maltese Islands, which subsequently became separated from the African continent and surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.

Therefore, while Malta is geographically located in Europe, it has geological origins linked to the African tectonic plate, indicating a prehistoric connection to the African continent.
