South Africa is home to the Cape Floristic Region, one of only six floral kingdoms worldwide. Despite covering less than 0.5% of Africa's land area, it contains over 9,000 plant species—70% of which are endemic (found nowhere else).

While not separate floral kingdoms, South Africa also hosts unique biomes such as:

• Succulent Karoo – Rich in succulents (mesembs, aloes).
• Fynbos – Mediterranean-type shrubland with proteas, ericas, restios.
• Grassland – Highveld grasslands.
• Nama Karoo – Semi-arid shrubland.
• Albany Thicket – Dense, succulent-dominated thicket in the Eastern Cape.

These regions are biodiversity hotspots threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species.
