Mozambique's Electricity Exports: Powering Southern Africa

As of 2020, Mozambique serves as a key electricity supplier in the Southern African Power Pool, exporting power to three neighboring countries:

  • Eswatini (formerly Swaziland)
  • South Africa
  • Zimbabwe

This cross-border energy trade is facilitated by the Cahora Bassa Dam on the Zambezi River, one of Africa's largest hydroelectric facilities, operated by Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB). The dam generates the bulk of Mozambique's electricity, with surplus transmitted via high-voltage lines to the region.

Mozambique aims to expand its role as a regional energy hub, with ongoing investments in natural gas-fired plants and additional hydro projects. These exports generate vital foreign revenue while supporting industrialization and electrification efforts in partner nations.
