Religious Landscape of Mozambique: Christianity, Islam, and Traditional Beliefs

Mozambique is a religiously diverse nation where faith plays a central role in cultural identity. According to recent estimates, Christianity is the predominant religion, practiced by approximately 56.1% of the population. The largest denomination is Roman Catholicism (28.4%), a legacy of Portuguese colonial influence, followed by various Protestant groups including Pentecostals, Anglicans, and Methodists.

Islam is the second-largest religion, adhered to by about 18.9% of Mozambicans, primarily in the northern coastal regions. The majority are Sunni Muslims, with a long history dating back to Arab and Swahili traders.

Around 1.5% of the population follow traditional African religions, often blended with Christian or Islamic practices. Smaller communities of Hindus, Buddhists, and other faiths exist, mainly among immigrant populations.

The Constitution guarantees religious freedom, and interfaith relations are generally peaceful. Religious institutions play significant roles in education, healthcare, and social cohesion across the country.
