The Mozambique Current: Not Warm, But Cold and Nutrient-Rich

Contrary to common assumption, the Mozambique Current is a cold-water current. It flows northward along the Mozambican coast as part of the South Equatorial Current system, bringing cooler waters from the Southern Ocean.

This current can lower adjacent air and sea surface temperatures by ~6°C compared to surrounding areas. Its upwelling brings nutrient-rich deep water to the surface, fueling high marine productivity—supporting fisheries, coral reefs, and biodiversity in the Mozambique Channel.

The current influences regional climate, cyclone formation, and weather patterns. For swimmers and divers: expect cooler water than typical tropical latitudes, especially during upwelling events. The "warm" counterpart is the Agulhas Current further south, flowing southwest along South Africa's east coast.
