1. Introduction:
Handball was introduced to Ethiopia by European settlers during the colonial period. It is believed that the sport was first played in Addis Ababa, the capital city, and gradually spread to other parts of the country.
2. Early Development:
In the early days, handball was primarily played by expatriates and urban elites in Ethiopia. However, the sport quickly gained popularity among the local population, particularly among young people. Handball clubs and teams were formed in schools, colleges, and community centers.
3. National Competitions:
The Ethiopian Handball Federation (EHF) was established in 1971 to oversee and promote the sport in the country. The EHF organized national championships and tournaments, bringing together teams from different regions of Ethiopia. These competitions helped develop a competitive handball scene and raise the overall standard of the sport.
4. International Participation:
Ethiopia began participating in international handball events in the 1980s. The country's national handball team made its debut at the African Handball Championship in 1983, and has since participated in several continental and international tournaments.
5. Success and Challenges:
Ethiopian handball teams have achieved some success regionally, winning medals at the East and Central Africa Handball Federation (ECAHF) Championships. However, the country has yet to make a significant impact on the global handball stage. Lack of resources, limited infrastructure, and inadequate funding continue to be challenges for handball development in Ethiopia.
6. Current Status:
Today, handball is played as a recreational and competitive sport in Ethiopia. While it may not be as popular as other sports like football or athletics, handball continues to have a dedicated following and is played in schools, universities, and clubs across the country. Efforts are being made by the EHF and various organizations to promote and develop the sport further in Ethiopia.
