Is Africa in the Middle East? No—It's a Continent

Africa is neither in the Middle East nor "in the southeast." It is the world's second-largest continent (30.3 million km²), spanning both hemispheres and bordered by:

  • Mediterranean Sea (north)
  • Red Sea & Suez Canal (northeast, separating it from Asia)
  • Indian Ocean (east/southeast)
  • Atlantic Ocean (west)

Why the Confusion Exists

North Africa (Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco) shares cultural, religious, and historical ties with the Middle East—Arabic language, Islam, Ottoman legacy. Geopolitically, it's often grouped in MENA (Middle East and North Africa). But geographically, the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt) is the only African land in Asia; the rest of Africa is a distinct continental plate.

Sub-Saharan Africa

The 40+ countries south of the Sahara have vastly different ecologies, histories, and cultures—Niger-Congo and Nilo-Saharan language families, diverse indigenous religions alongside Christianity and Islam, no historical connection to Middle Eastern civilizations.

Key Distinction

  • Middle East = transcontinental region (Western Asia + Egypt)
  • Africa = continent (54 sovereign states, 1.4 billion people)
  • Overlap = North African countries participate in both frameworks

Precision matters: "Africa" refers to a continent; "the Middle East" to a cultural-geopolitical region. They intersect but are not synonymous.
