Three Drivers of European Dominance in Africa

The Scramble for Africa (late 19th century) was propelled by:

  1. Industrial Revolution: Europe gained advanced weapons (maxim guns, artillery), steamships, railroads, and quinine (malaria prophylaxis), enabling deep penetration.
  2. Imperialist Rivalry: Nations competed for raw materials (rubber, ivory, minerals), markets, and strategic territory; nationalism and prestige fueled expansion.
  3. African Political Fragmentation: Diverse, often decentralized societies lacked unified resistance; some rulers collaborated for short-term gain, weakening collective defense.

These factors combined to allow rapid conquest and colonization by 1914.
