Morocco's Military History: From Early Conquests to Modern Peacekeeping
Morocco's strategic location at the Strait of Gibraltar has made it a crossroads of empires and a participant in conflicts for over 1,300 years. Its military engagements fall into distinct historical phases.
Early Islamic Expansion (7th–8th Century)
Umayyad Conquests: Moroccan Berber tribes joined the Arab-led expansion across North Africa and into Iberia (Al-Andalus). The Battle of Guadalete (711) opened Spain to Muslim rule.
Berber Dynasties: Empire Builders (11th–15th Century)
- Almoravids (1040–1147): Founded by Saharan Berbers; conquered Morocco, Algeria, Al-Andalus; fought Christian Reconquista (Battle of Sagrajas 1086).
- Almohads (1121–1269): Successors; unified Maghreb and Al-Andalus; defeated at Las Navas de Tolosa (1212).
- Marinids (1244–1465): Zenata Berbers; fought Portuguese at Ceuta (1415), Tangier; built Fez's madrasas.
Saadian & Alaouite Periods (16th–19th Century)
- Saadians (1510–1659): Defeated Portuguese at Battle of Ksar el-Kebir (1578); expelled them from Agadir, Asilah, Mazagan.
- Alaouites (1666–present): Current dynasty. Fought Ottoman incursions, European coastal bombardments, internal rebellions.
- 19th Century: Conflicts with France (Battle of Isly 1844), Spain (Tetouan War 1859–60); increasing European pressure.
Colonial & Protectorate Era (1912–1956)
Morocco became a French Protectorate (1912) with a Spanish zone (north/south). Moroccan troops (Goumiers, Tirailleurs) fought for France in:
- WWI (Western Front, Gallipoli)
- WWII (Italy, France, Germany—Goumiers renowned at Monte Cassino)
- Indochina War
Modern Era (1956–Present)
- Western Sahara Conflict (1975–present): Morocco controls ~80% of territory; conflict with Polisario Front (ceasefire 1991, resumed 2020).
- Peacekeeping: UN missions in DRC (MONUSCO), Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), CAR (MINUSCA), Bosnia, Somalia, Kosovo.
- Counterterrorism: Dismantled ISIS/AQIM cells; regional cooperation (G5 Sahel, Global Coalition).
- Military Exercises: African Lion (with US), joint drills with NATO, France, Gulf states.
No Major Interstate Wars Since Independence
Morocco has not fought a conventional war against another sovereign state since 1956. Its security doctrine emphasizes stability, territorial integrity (Western Sahara), and partnership with West.
