Libya's Mountain Ranges: Acacus and Tibesti
Two Major Upland Systems
Libya is predominantly flat desert, but two significant mountain areas exist:
1. Acacus Mountains (Tadrart Acacus)
- Location: Southwest, near Algerian border (Fezzan).
- Highest: ~1,400 m.
- Features: Sandstone arches, rock art (UNESCO, 12,000 BCE–100 CE), eroded canyons.
- Climate: Hyper-arid; occasional gueltas (pools).
2. Tibesti Mountains (Northern Extent)
- Location: Far south, mainly in Chad; northern foothills enter Libya.
- Highest in Libya: ~2,200 m (Emi Koussi summit 3,415 m is in Chad).
- Geology: Volcanic (shield volcanoes, calderas).
- Features: Hot springs, unique flora/fauna, Toubou pastoralists.
Other Elevations
- Jebel Nafusa (NW) — 600–900 m escarpment.
- Al-Jabal al-Akhdar (NE) — 500–850 m, Mediterranean climate.
Mountains are islands of biodiversity and cultural heritage in the Sahara.
