Geological Overview of Zambia: Basement Complex, Mobile Belts, and Karoo Basin
Zambia's geology spans 3.5+ billion years, divided into three main regions:
1. Precambrian Basement Complex
- Oldest unit (>3.5 Ga)
- Igneous/metamorphic: granite, gneiss, schist
- Exposed in NE and SE Zambia
2. Mobile Belts (Proterozoic, 2.5 Ga–541 Ma)
- Lufilian Arc (NE): Metamorphic rocks; hosts the Copperbelt's world-class copper-cobalt deposits.
- Zambezi Belt (SW): Volcanic and sedimentary rocks.
3. Karoo Basin (Late Carboniferous–Early Jurassic, ~300–180 Ma)
- Sedimentary sequence: sandstone, shale, coal
- Covers southern Zambia, extending into Zimbabwe/Botswana
- Coal deposits used for power generation
This geology underpins Zambia's mineral wealth (copper, cobalt, gold, zinc, lead) and energy resources.
