Italian Invasions During World War II
Italy invaded several regions and countries during World War II:
- France (June 1940): Joined Germany in invading France, occupying parts of southeastern France including the French Riviera.
- Yugoslavia (April 1941): Participated in the Axis invasion, occupying parts of Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro.
- Greece (October 1940): Invaded but faced strong resistance; German intervention secured occupation by April 1941.
- North Africa: Italian forces fought British and Commonwealth troops in Libya (Battle of Sidi Barrani, Siege of Tobruk).
- East Africa: Forces in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia engaged British troops; British liberated these territories by early 1942.
- Albania (April 1939): Annexed Albania, making it part of the Italian Empire.
- Dodecanese Islands (1912): Occupied during the Italo‑Turkish War; remained under Italian administration until WWII’s end.
Italy ultimately lost all annexed or occupied territories after its defeat in WWII.
