Why did the europeans want to travel and trade?

1. Spices

Spices were highly prized in Europe in the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. They were used to preserve food, add flavor, and for medicinal purposes. Some of the most sought-after spices included black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. These spices were native to Southeast Asia, India, and the Middle East.

2. Gold and silver

Gold and silver were also highly valued in Europe. They were used to make jewelry, coins, and other objects. Europe did not have a lot of its own gold and silver, so it had to import these metals from other regions. Africa, the Americas, and Asia were all sources of gold and silver.

3. Other goods

In addition to spices and precious metals, Europeans also wanted to trade for other goods such as silk, porcelain, cotton, sugar, and tea. These goods were not available in Europe, or were very expensive. By trading with other regions, Europeans could obtain these goods at a lower cost.

4. Desire for exploration

Some Europeans were simply driven by a desire to explore new places and learn about different cultures. The Age of Exploration was a time of great curiosity and wonder, and many people were eager to see the world beyond their own borders.

5. Political and religious expansionism

Finally, some Europeans wanted to travel and trade in order to expand their political and religious power. This was especially true of the Portuguese and Spanish, who were both Catholic countries. They were eager to spread their religion to other parts of the world, and they also wanted to establish colonies and trading posts in order to increase their power and wealth.
