Iowa vs. Arizona Corn Production: No Contest
Iowa is the undisputed #1 corn state. Arizona is a negligible producer.
The Numbers (USDA NASS, 2023)
| Metric | Iowa | Arizona | Ratio |
| Planted Acres | 13.1 million | ~55,000 | 238:1 |
| Harvested Acres (Grain) | 12.5 million | ~45,000 | 278:1 |
| Yield (bu/ac) | 201 | ~180 (irrigated) | — |
| Production (million bu) | **2,518** | **8.1** | **311:1** |
| Value of Production | $12.6B | $42M | 300:1 |
Why Iowa Dominates
- Soil: Deep, fertile **Mollisols** (prairie loam) — 3–5 ft topsoil, high organic matter.
- Climate: Adequate rainfall (30–36"), warm growing degree days, minimal heat stress.
- Infrastructure: Rail, barge (Mississippi), ethanol plants (40+), storage, input supply.
- Genetics: Breeding programs (ISU, private) optimized for Corn Belt.
Why Arizona Doesn't
- Water: Corn needs 22–30" water. AZ gets 3–13" (irrigated only).
- Heat: >95°F during pollination = kernel abortion.
- Land Cost/Opportunity: Alfalfa, cotton, lettuce, citrus, solar pay more per acre-ft.
- Salinity: Colorado River water + evaporation = soil salt buildup.
What AZ *Does* Grow
- **Lettuce/Leafy Greens** (Yuma = 90% US winter supply).
- **Durum Wheat** (pasta).
- **Cotton** (Pima, Upland).
- **Alfalfa/Hay** (dairy/export).
- **Citrus, Dates, Melons, Broccoli, Cauliflower.**
- **Cattle** (feedlots).
Iowa grows **18% of US corn on 4% of US land**. Arizona grows **0.06%**. The Corn Belt ends at the 100th Meridian—Arizona is far beyond it.
