Where was the Safavid Empire?

The Safavid Empire was located in the region corresponding to present-day Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia and parts of Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. Spanning an area of around 2.75 million square kilometres (1.1 million square miles) at its peak, it would become one of the largest gunpowder empires of its era.
