Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis): Discovered in Ethiopia, Not Tanzania—No Real Confusion

There is no scientific confusion about Lucy's discovery location. The fossil (AL 288-1, "Dinkinesh") was found in November 1974 at Hadar, Afar Region, Ethiopia by Donald Johanson's team.

Why the misconception sometimes arises:

  • Proximity: Ethiopia and Tanzania border each other; both have famous hominin sites (Hadar vs. Laetoli/Olduvai Gorge).
  • Early media reports occasionally conflated East African sites.
  • Similar age: Laetoli footprints (Tanzania, 3.66 Ma) and Lucy (Ethiopia, 3.2 Ma) are contemporaneous.

But the record is clear: Lucy = Hadar, Ethiopia. Major institutions (National Museum of Ethiopia, Cleveland Museum, Smithsonian) all cite Ethiopia. Tanzania's iconic finds are Laetoli footprints and Olduvai Gorge fossils (Zinjanthropus, Homo habilis).
