How did king Alfonso l of the Congo feel about slave trade?

Afonso l was the king of Kongo from 1506 until his death in 1543. According to the records, he was opposed to the slave trade. He wrote two letters to King John lll of Portugal appealing to him to stop and reduce the slave trade.
