1. Agriculture is the backbone of Malawi's economy, employing over 80% of the workforce and accounting for over 30% of GDP. Principal agricultural exports are tobacco, tea and sugar, while food crops grown for domestic consumption include maize, millet and sorghum.
2. Tourism is another key industry, with the country's natural beauty, wildlife reserves and cultural heritage attracting visitors from around the world. Lake Malawi, the third-largest lake in Africa, is a popular tourist destination, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, snorkeling and diving. The Nyika Plateau is another major draw, with its rolling hills, rugged cliffs and diverse wildlife, including zebras, antelopes and leopards.
3. Manufacturing is a relatively small sector in Malawi, contributing less than 10% of GDP. However, the government has been investing in this sector, with a particular focus on agro-processing, textiles, garments, and leather products.
