How many people died in Africa because of blood diamonds?

It is difficult to determine an exact figure for the number of people who died as a result of the blood diamond trade in Africa. However, the United Nations estimates that between 1990 and 2001, over 5 million people died as a direct or indirect result of armed conflicts fueled by the illicit trade in diamonds and other natural resources. These deaths were primarily due to violence, displacement, malnutrition, and disease, often in the context of civil wars and human rights abuses. The term "blood diamonds" refers specifically to diamonds that are mined and sold to finance armed conflicts, particularly in African countries during this time period.
