In Tanzania's High Court, assessors serve as expert advisors to the presiding judge, governed by the High Court (Organization and Procedure) Rules, particularly Rule 15.

Appointment

• The Chief Justice may direct that two or more assessors sit with a single judge in any trial.
• Assessors are drawn from a panel of individuals vetted and approved by the Judicial Service Commission.

Qualifications

• Must be a Tanzanian citizen.
• Minimum age: 25 years.
• Proficient in English.
• Good character, no criminal convictions.
• Possess relevant education, knowledge, or experience pertinent to the case (e.g., engineering, medicine, accounting).

Functions

• Assist the judge in evaluating evidence.
• May question witnesses and offer opinions on factual or technical matters.
• Do not have decision-making power; the judge alone renders the verdict.
