Why was the Africans brought to Trinidad and Tobago?

To replace enslaved Indigenous peoples whose labour and lives were decimated through forced labour, warfare, introduced infectious diseases, suicide and cultural disintegration by Spanish colonists.

Africans brought to Trinidad and Tobago were subjected to harsh living and working conditions on slave plantations and cocoa estates owned by European colonists.

They primarily performed physically demanding agricultural labour or domestic household work and did not receive fair compensation for their labour.

Despite the brutal system of enslavement, African enslaved people and their descendants in Trinidad and Tobago have actively and continuously resisted slavery in various forms, shaped cultural practices and have significantly and positively contributed to shaping the rich cultural diversity and development of Trinidadian and Tobagonian society.
