Namibia is a unitary state with a parliamentary system of government. The President is the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Namibian Defence Force, and is elected for a five-year term by popular vote. The President appoints the Prime Minister, who is the Head of Government and responsible for appointing other members of the Cabinet. The Cabinet is collectively responsible to the National Assembly, which is the highest legislative body. The National Assembly consists of 96 members, of whom 72 are directly elected by proportional representation and 24 are appointed by the President.
The judiciary is independent of the executive and legislative branches of government. The Supreme Court of Namibia is the highest court and has both original and appellate jurisdiction. The Supreme Court is composed of a Chief Justice and six other judges.
Namibia is a member of several international organisations, including the African Union, the Southern African Development Community, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the United Nations.
