Why does the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia want to be Macedonia?
The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) wants to be called Macedonia because it believes that this is its historical name and that it reflects the country's cultural and ethnic heritage. The name "Macedonia" has been used to refer to the region for centuries, and it is the name that was used by the ancient kingdom of Macedonia, which was founded by Alexander the Great. The country's official name was changed to "FYROM" in 1993, after Greece objected to the use of the name "Macedonia", claiming that it implied territorial claims over the Greek province of Macedonia. However, the people of FYROM continue to refer to their country as "Macedonia", and they have been campaigning for the country's official name to be changed back to "Macedonia".
