Vacations in the Seychelles Islands

The heavenly Republic of Seychelles, a group of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, east of Kenya, is a vacation destination with a legendary history of pirates and buried treasures. Today it welcomes visitors to discover treasures of a different sort--tropical rain forests, coral reefs teeming with thousands of fish species, alabaster beaches soaked in sunlight and Vallee de Mai Nature Reserve, a prehistoric forest and World Heritage Site.
  1. Facts

    • The three major islands of the Seychelles are Mahe, Praslin and LaDigue. "Mahe is the largest island and is the site of Victoria, the capital," according to U.S. Department of State. The only international airport is on Mahe.

    Features

    • Forty-two of the islands, including Mahe, are granite islands. Only 33 of these are inhabited. The rest of the islands are uninhabitable coral atolls. Three official languages are spoken on the islands: Creole, English and French.

    Entry Requirements

    • To visit the Seychelles you must have a valid passport and an onward/return ticket. You also are required to provide the address where you will stay during your visit and give proof of sufficient funds, according to the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs.

    Currency

    • Cash, traveler's checks and some credit cards are accepted in the Seychelles. However, "many hotels, restaurants and other establishments have credit card systems that only accept foreign currencies, so visitors should be aware that foreign transaction and other fees may apply to credit card purchases," advises the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs.

    Popular Attractions

    • Victoria's Clock Tower, the National History Museum, Morne Seychellois National Park and Beau Vallon Beach are popular attractions on the island of Mahe. Praslin Ocean Farm, where giant clams and black lip pearl oysters are cultivated, is a must-see while vacationing in the Seychelles.

    Where to Stay

    • A variety of hotels and luxury accommodations are available, such as Four Seasons Resort Seychelles, 30 minutes from the airport on Mahe. Enjoy the privacy of secluded Four Degrees Villa on Cerf Island, surrounded by the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, not far from Mahe Island.
