Vacations in the French Caribbean

Vacationing in the French Caribbean has never before been so accessible. There are many options for the Caribbean tourist including floating hotels, average hotels in great locations, five-star all-inclusive resorts, beach-side bungalows and even lavish private villas on the beach. Smaller islands will feel like less of a tourist destination, while larger islands remain fairly commercial. It's up to you to choose what type of vacation you would like to experience.
  1. Resorts

    • For a structured, worry-free vacation stay at an inclusive resort.

Spend a relaxing vacation at a resort and don't worry about anything. The French Islands of Guadeloupe and St. Martin (San Maarten on the Dutch end of the island) both host all-inclusive resort hotels for vacationers. The Oyster Bay Beach Resort on St. Martin is built on top of exclusive coral reef land, according to its website, and surrounded by aquamarine Caribbean Sea. Rooms at Oyster Bay are anything from studios, superior suites, deluxe lofts to two-bedroom suites. You can opt for an ocean view or a private bit of beach. The Karibea Beach Resort is another all-inclusive vacation facility on the island of Guadeloupe. According to Karibea, the resort sits on the most beautiful property on the island.

    Islands

    • The French Caribbean Islands include Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Barthélemy/ St. Barts, St. Martin/St. Maarten, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante. St. Martin, a small Island, features 300 restaurants, 12 casinos, night clubs, boutiques and charter boats. All of the Islands embrace the celebratory vacation atmosphere. Guadeloupe and Martinique are the largest of the islands, and car rental may be necessary to explore all of them. Most of the other islands are fully accessible by scooter or shuttle boat. St. Barts is one of the smallest islands but features a wealth of sandy beaches.

    Cruises

    • See all of the islands from your traveling water-top hotel.

A good way to see all of the islands is on a floating hotel. A cruise ship offers endless activity as well as a changing landscape. It will stop at various islands and places of interest to allow passengers to explore the island for a period of time. Then the ship embarks again, all the while hosting fresh-cooked meals, music and activities on board. There are vessels that carry anywhere from a few dozen passengers to hundreds. Make a list of amenities you desire on board your floating hotel and then choose a cruise line based on your needs.

    Private Villas

    • Experience intimate meals at a homelike setting.

For privacy, tropical wilderness, the sounds of nature and a beach you can strip down on rent a private villa. These can be very expensive, but you get a lot more autonomy and privacy than at a hotel or resort. The idea of a full kitchen in which you can prepare whole meals, a bedroom for every family member and a private beach is very attractive to many Caribbean tourists.
