Arrive in Windhoek, Namibia. Economy, round-trip flights from New York to Windhoek typically cost between $1,800 and $2,500. A visa is not required for American tourists visiting Namibia for less than 90 days.
Rent a car in Windhoek. This can be done simply and easily right at the airport. An economy rental car will cost you between $30 and $40 per day.
Follow the C28 (a national highway) out of Windhoek, heading west. You'll drive into the beautiful desert, flanked on left and right by wilderness tracts stretching all the way to the horizon. Enjoy the drive, which will take the better part of a day as you cover around 200 miles.
Arrive in Swakopmund, Namibia. Swakopmund is a quaint, pleasant town hugging the coastline, just north of Walvis Bay. Its German origins are immediately evident in both the architecture and the cuisine; this writer suggests sampling the town's famous weinerschnitzel. Spend the night here.
Drive south from Swakopmund on the B2 a distance of 25 miles until you reach Walvis Bay.
Enjoy Walvis Bay. The beach is nice, but don't forget the desert behind you--Walvis Bay is home to some of Namibia's great dunes, including the mighty Dune 7. Day trip options from Walvis Bay include a drive up the Skeleton Coast to the north, a desert safari to the west or some deep-sea fishing to the east.
