Meaning:
The term "Interahamwe" roughly translates to "those who stand together" or "those who attack together" in the Kinyarwanda language. It was originally formed in the 1970s as the youth wing of the National Revolutionary Movement for Development (MRND), which was the ruling political party at the time.
Background:
The Interahamwe evolved from the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), a Tutsi rebel group fighting against the Hutu-dominated government. In response, the Hutu extremist elements organized and armed the Interahamwe to counter the RPF and protect Hutu interests. Over time, the group adopted a radical and extremist ideology based on Hutu ethnic identity and anti-Tutsi sentiments.
Organization and Structure:
The Interahamwe was not a formally organized military unit but rather a loosely structured network of Hutu militias. It operated in cells and units across the country, and its membership varied over time. The militia was primarily comprised of young Hutu men, many of whom were recruited from schools, universities, and rural communities.
Role in the Rwandan Genocide:
During the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, the Interahamwe played a central and notorious role in carrying out massacres and atrocities against Tutsi civilians. They were responsible for committing widespread killings, torture, rape, and destruction of Tutsi property. The Interahamwe operated in collaboration with other extremist Hutu groups and government forces, receiving backing and support from high-ranking officials.
