What year was south Sudan created?

South Sudan became an independent country on 9 July 2011. Prior to this, it was part of the Republic of Sudan. The decision to secede from Sudan was made following a referendum in January 2011, in which 98.83% of voters in South Sudan voted in favour of independence.
