Bangladesh's Borders: India, Myanmar & the Bay of Bengal—No India-Myanmar Border
Clarification: There is no direct border between India and Myanmar that touches Bangladesh. Bangladesh shares borders with three entities:
- India: West, north, east — 4,096 km (5th longest land border globally). Enclaves/exclaves resolved 2015 Land Boundary Agreement.
- Myanmar: Southeast — 271 km (Naaf River, then land). Rohingya crisis zone.
- Bay of Bengal: South — 580 km coastline.
Tri-Junction Point
The India-Bangladesh-Myanmar tripoint is at the Naaf River mouth (approx. 20.9°N, 92.3°E), near Myanmar's Maungdaw and Bangladesh's Teknaf. This is a single coordinate—not a border segment.
Why the Confusion?
- Maps at low resolution blur the tripoint into a line.
- India-Myanmar border (1,643 km) runs north from this tripoint along the Chin Hills/Arakan Yomas—entirely separate from Bangladesh.
- Bangladesh's eastern border with India (Mizoram/Tripura) runs near the India-Myanmar border but doesn't touch it.
Strategic Significance
- Chittagong Port (Bangladesh) + Sittwe Port (Myanmar, India-funded) + Mizoram (India) = Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Project — India's Northeast access bypassing Siliguri Corridor.
- Rohingya refugee flows (2017+): Myanmar → Bangladesh across Naaf; India secures its Mizoram/Manipur border separately.
- Drug/trafficking routes: Golden Triangle → Northeast India / Bangladesh / Myanmar coast.
Bottom line: Bangladesh borders India (long), Myanmar (short), and the Bay. India and Myanmar border each other north of Bangladesh. Three countries, three bilateral borders, one tripoint.
