China's global education standing presents a nuanced profile. In the UN's Education Index, which measures mean and expected years of schooling, China ranks approximately 56th worldwide. However, in the OECD's PISA assessments — which test 15-year-olds' reading, math, and science skills — China (represented by Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang) ranked 84th in the most recent comparable data. At the university level, despite massive enrollment and research output, Chinese institutions generally trail top Western counterparts in global rankings relative to the country's economic scale. China does provide free, compulsory education through middle school (K–9), supporting broad access, but challenges remain in equity, critical thinking pedagogy, and higher education quality.
