Is Afghanistan a third world country?

The term "Third World" is an outdated and controversial concept that was coined during the Cold War to categorize countries based on their political alignment. It is no longer widely used in international development discourse. Instead, countries are often categorized based on their Human Development Index (HDI), which takes into account factors such as life expectancy, education, and per capita income.

According to the 2020 Human Development Report, Afghanistan has an HDI of 0.497, ranking 171st out of 189 countries. This places Afghanistan in the category of "low human development."

Afghanistan faces significant challenges, including conflict, poverty, and political instability. These challenges have had a negative impact on the country's development indicators, and have contributed to its low HDI ranking.
