What do Chinese celebrate?

The Chinese celebrate many things throughout the year, with some of the most important celebrations being:

春节 Chūn Jié (Spring Festival): Also known as the Chinese New Year, it is the most important holiday in Chinese culture. Celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar, it marks the beginning of a new year and is a time for families to reunite, feast, and exchange red envelopes (hóngbāo) containing money as gifts.

清明节 Qīng Míng Jié (Qingming Festival): This festival, observed on April 5th or 6th, honors deceased ancestors and loved ones. Chinese people visit the graves of their relatives, clean the tombs, and offer food, incense, and paper offerings to show respect and remember their departed loved ones.

端午节 Duān Wǔ Jié (Dragon Boat Festival): Held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, the Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the life and death of the poet Qu Yuan (340-278 BC). People eat sticky rice dumplings (zòngzi), race dragon boats, and hang sachets of herbs and spices on doors to ward off evil spirits.

中秋节 Zhōng Qiū Jié (Mid-Autumn Festival): This festival, which falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, marks a time for family reunions and the celebration of the moon. It is customary to eat mooncakes, admire the moon, and gather with loved ones to share stories and appreciate the beauty of the full moon.

国庆节 Guó Qìng Jié (National Day): Celebrated on October 1st, this holiday honors the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. It is marked with parades, fireworks, and patriotic celebrations throughout the country.

In addition to these major festivals, Chinese culture also recognizes other important holidays such as the Lantern Festival (Yuánxiāo Jié) on the 15th day of the first lunar month, the Ghost Festival (Zhōngyuán Jié) on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, and the Double Ninth Festival (Chóngyáng Jié) on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month.
