The Birth of Indonesia: From Colonial Rule to Independence

Indonesia proclaimed independence on August 17, 1945, shortly after the Japanese surrender in World War II. Nationalist movements had gained momentum during the Japanese occupation. The Netherlands attempted to reassert colonial control, sparking the Indonesian National Revolution. After four years of armed conflict and diplomacy, the Dutch formally recognized Indonesian sovereignty on December 27, 1949.
