Population Distribution in Thailand

Thailand's population is highly unevenly distributed:

Central Plains (Highest Density)

The Bangkok metropolitan area and surrounding central plains house over 8.3 million people—one of the world's most densely populated urban regions.

Northeast (Isan)

Comprising ~1/3 of Thailand's land area but only ~1/3 of its population due to poorer soil and less industrialization. However, Isan is a major agricultural export producer.

Mountainous Border Regions

Sparsely populated due to difficult terrain.

Other Major Urban Centers

Densely populated provincial cities include Hat Yai, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, Phuket, and Ubon Ratchathani.
