According to Mahidol University, the Wai khru ceremony made its way to Thailand via India. It is thought to be derived from animistic beliefs as the deities named in the ceremony come from Brahmanism.
The Wai khru ceremony traditionally begins with a Buddhist chant. Next the students read a recitation to the their teachers, formally requesting their blessing for the coming school year.
According to Mahidol University, the Wai khru ceremony has evolved over the years as the original text has been lost. According to ThailandFriends.com, the modern version of the ceremony began in 1941 at Triam Udom Suksa School.
