The Atlantis Resort is owned by Sol Kerzner and Kerzner International Limited. Kerzner is a South African hotel and casino magnate who created South Africa's most successful group of five star hotels called Sun International. He is currently the CEO of Kerzner International and his most recent project is the Atlantis Palm Resort in Dubai.
Kerzner purchased the 1,150 room Paradise Island Resort and Casino in the Bahamas in 1994 after it fell into bankruptcy. After his acquisition, he expanded and redeveloped the resort to turn it into the Atlantis Resort. The Atlantis then became a 2,300-room resort with a world-class marina and the biggest casino entertainment center in the entire Caribbean region.
When the Atlantis officially opened in 1998, its Coral and Beach towers originally were called the Trump Plaza. However, the name was changed to Atlantis after the Royal Towers were constructed. The Coral and Beach towers were later renovated to complement the hotel's concept of the Royal Towers.
The Atlantis Resort later expanded its accommodation offerings by building the Cove Atlantis and Reef Atlantis. The Cove Atlantis luxury hotel and the Reef Atlantis Tower both opened in 2007. The Harborside Resort was subsequently built and is situated across the marina from the Atlantis Resort. It offers Atlantis guests villas and exclusive private luxury amenities.
