Just an hour's drive east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Seven Springs Mountain Resort is located in the town of the same name. The all-season property is listed as one of the top 50 resorts in the nation by the "Mountain Sports and Living" Magazine.
The resort was founded by Adolph Dupre in 1932. The original structure was a Bavarian style cabin he built for his family.
In 1935, Seven Springs was credited with using the first mechanical tow rope to pull skiers to the mountain summit. A Packard auto engine provided the power. It was also one of the first resorts to make its own snow, starting in 1960.
Booth Creek Ski Holdings out of Colorado attempted to buy Seven Springs in 1999, but the three families who owned the resort could not agree on the sale.
In 2006 the Nutting family, owners of the Ogden Newspapers in Wheeling, West Virginia, made a successful purchase of the property from the Dupre families.
Seven Springs offers two terrain parks, a super-pipe, lighted night skiing and two six-seater high-speed lifts. Summer visitors have their pick of outdoor activities including golf, mountain biking and horseback riding.
The one time Bavarian cabin has been replaced with 418 hotel rooms and suites and almost 1,200 town homes and condos.
