US Strategy vs. Japan (Final 6 Months WWII): Firebombs, Blockade, A-Bombs & Soviet Entry

From March–August 1945, the US executed a multi-axis strangulation strategy to force Japan's surrender without invasion.

1. Incendiary Bombing Campaign (Operation Meetinghouse →)

• Mar 9–10, 1945: Tokyo firebombing — 334 B-29s, 1,665 tons napalm/cluster, 16 sq mi destroyed, 100k+ dead (single deadliest air raid).
• Mar–Aug: 67 cities firebombed — 40% urban area destroyed, 500k+ dead, 5M+ homeless.
• Effect: Industrial output collapsed; morale shattered; no effective air defense left.

2. Island Hopping Culmination

• Iwo Jima (Feb–Mar): 26,000 US casualties; emergency B-29 landing field; fighter escort base.
• Okinawa (Apr–Jun): 82-day battle, 50k US / 110k JP / 100k+ civilian dead; staging for invasion, kamikaze peak (1,900 sorties).

3. Naval & Submarine Blockade (Operation Starvation)

• Submarines: 2,000+ merchant ships sunk (55% Japanese tonnage); oil, rice, steel, bauxite cut off.
• B-29 mining: 12,000 aerial mines in harbors/straits (Shimonoseki, Kobe, Tokyo Bay) — closed ports.
• Surface fleet: Carrier raids (TF 38/58) on coastal shipping, shipyards, airfields.
• Result: Japan at 10% oil, 20% rice, 0% bauxite by Aug 1945.

4. Invasion Planning (Operation Downfall)

• Olympic (Nov 1945): Kyushu — 14 divisions, 767k troops.
• Coronet (Mar 1946): Honshu (Tokyo plain) — 25 divisions, 1.2M troops.
• Casualty estimates: 250k–1M US; millions Japanese (military + civilian mobilization).
• Purple Heart stock: 500k minted for invasion — still used today.

5. Manhattan Project & Atomic Bombs

• Trinity test (Jul 16): Validated plutonium implosion.
• Hiroshima (Aug 6): "Little Boy" (U-235) — 70k instant, 140k by Dec.
• Nagasaki (Aug 9): "Fat Man" (Pu-239) — 40k instant, 70k by Dec.
• Psychological shock: "New and most cruel bomb" — Hirohito's surrender speech cited it.

6. Psychological Warfare

• Leaflets (63M dropped): surrender instructions, city target warnings (LeMay's "rain of ruin").

• POW treatment improvement (late) — signal willingness to follow Geneva.

7. Soviet Entry (Aug 9)

• Manchurian Strategic Offensive — 1.5M Soviet troops crushed Kwantung Army (700k) in 2 weeks.
• Sakhalin, Kurils, N. Korea seized.
• Eliminated Japan's hope for Soviet mediation; two-front collapse.

Surrender Sequence

1. Jul 26: Potsdam Declaration (unconditional surrender terms).
2. Aug 6: Hiroshima.
3. Aug 8: USSR declares war.
4. Aug 9: Nagasaki + Manchuria invasion.
5. Aug 10: Japan accepts Potsdam (with "emperor preserved" condition).
6. Aug 14: US accepts condition (emperor as symbol).
7. Aug 15: Hirohito broadcast (Gyokuon-hōsō).
8. Sep 2: Formal surrender aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

The strategy was cumulative: bombing + blockade + invasion threat + atomic shock + Soviet entry = no rational alternative. The "unconditional surrender" demand held; the emperor stayed (symbolic). War over.
