Asia's Five Landlocked Countries: Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan

Five Asian nations have no coastline:

  1. Afghanistan — Heart of Asia, ringed by Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China (Wakhan Corridor).
  2. Bhutan — Eastern Himalayas, between China (Tibet) and India.
  3. Kazakhstan — World's largest landlocked country (2.7M km²); borders Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan; Caspian Sea (inland sea, no ocean access).
  4. Kyrgyzstan — "Switzerland of Central Asia," 94% mountains; borders Kazakhstan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan.
  5. Nepal — Himalayas, between China (Tibet) and India; Mt. Everest.

Not Landlocked (Common Confusions)

  • Mongolia — Often listed, but it's in North Asia (UN geoscheme: "Mongolia" = Eastern Asia). Still landlocked! (6th if counting all Asia).
  • Laos — Southeast Asia, landlocked (7th).
  • Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan — Central Asia, landlocked (doubly landlocked: Uzbekistan, Liechtenstein only two globally).

Implications

  • Transit dependence: Afghanistan → Pakistan/Iran ports; Central Asia → Russia/China/Iran.
  • Trade costs: +30–50% vs. coastal neighbors (UNCTAD).
  • Regional bodies: SCO, CAREC, SAARC, BIMSTEC address connectivity.

Total landlocked in Asia (UN geoscheme): 12. The five above are the most commonly cited "core" group.
