What happened in 1281 with China and Japan?

The Mongol invasions of Japan took place in 1274 and 1281 when Kublai Khan, the Mongol ruler of the Yuan dynasty, attempted to conquer the Japanese archipelago but was repelled both times by samurai forces defending the coasts of Kyushu.
