What was capital before Jakarta?

The capital of Indonesia before Jakarta was Batavia. Batavia was founded by the Dutch in 1619 as a trading post and quickly grew to become a major port and administrative centre. In 1949, the city was renamed Jakarta and became the capital of Indonesia after the country's independence from Dutch rule.
