Jakarta's Predecessor: Batavia, the Dutch Colonial Capital

Before Jakarta became Indonesia's capital (1949), the city was Batavia – the capital of the Dutch East Indies for over three centuries.

Batavia's Urban Legacy in Jakarta

Kota Tua (Old Town): VOC warehouses, Stadhuis (now Jakarta History Museum), Toko Merah, Gereja Sion (oldest church).

Weltevreden (Gambir/Menteng): 19th-c. administrative district – Merdeka Palace, Gambir Station, Monas.
Street names: Jalan Thamrin, Sudirman, Gajah Mada – nationalist heroes replacing Dutch names.

Future Capital: Nusantara

Indonesia is building Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan as new capital (inauguration targeted 2024–2025). Jakarta remains economic center; sinking, congestion, pollution drive relocation.
