Wild Betta Fish in Malaysia: Not Native

Betta splendens in Malaysia

Betta splendens (Siamese fighting fish) is not native to Malaysia. Its natural range is Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and parts of Indonesia (Sumatra, Borneo).

In Malaysia, bettas are only found as introduced/escaped aquarium specimens or in the ornamental fish trade. Wild populations, if any, are non-native and likely localized.

Native Malaysian Bettas

Malaysia has its own wild betta species (e.g., Betta bellica, Betta unimaculata, Betta akarensis) in forest streams and peat swamps, but these are not the colorful "fighting fish" of the aquarium trade.

For wild B. splendens, go to Thailand's Chao Phraya basin or Cambodian floodplains.
