Who closed Japan?

Japan was closed to foreigners by the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. The shogunate implemented a policy called sakoku, which means "closed country," in order to isolate Japan from the rest of the world and protect its traditional culture and values. During the sakoku period, only a few countries, such as China, Korea, and the Netherlands, were allowed to trade with Japan under strictly controlled conditions.
